Black Hawk wrestlers are making strides

The numbers on the scoreboard in last week’s two dual meets at Hartford for the Grafton High School wrestling team aren’t a measure of the effort and progress the team is making, first-year coach Brant Murray-McKelvey said.

The Black Hawks on Jan. 5 lost to Hartford, 71-12, and Nicolet, 57-24.

Senior Nathan Krause at 220 pounds earned pins in both duals.

He pinned Craig Creed of Hartford in 1 minute, 17 seconds, and Ty Buck of Nicolet in 1:24.

Senior Ben Birch at 182 pounds pinned Marshall Howard of Hartford in 2:35.

Audrey Hanson at 106 pounds pinned Daisy Altman of Nicolet in 4:35.

“The team looked great. The scores definitely do not reflect the amount of growth shown on the mat out of our team,” Murray-McKelvey said.

“This group is making tremendous strides every week, and it’s important to recognize that. The score may not always reflect that, but the team that wrestled last week is unrecognizable from the team that began this season. We keep getting better, we keep moving forward and we keep growing.”

The Hawks were to host West Bend West on Wednesday, Jan. 11, and wrestle in a tournament at Valders on Saturday, Jan. 14.

They wrestle in an invite at Homestead on Friday, Jan. 20.
