Barbara K. Schommer

Barbara K. Schommer of Belgium passed away peacefully at Forest Haven in Fredonia on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at the age of 101.
She was born in Belgium, Wis., to John and Mary (nee Birenbaum) Jacoby on July 23, 1919.
Barbara married Alvin Schommer on June 10, 1944, at St. Mary’s Church, Lake Church and together they had six children.
Barbara and Alvin lived and raised their children on the Schommer family farm in Belgium. She took great pride in having a family that was very close knit and enjoyed each other’s company. Hosting weekly Sunday family suppers was always done with great love.
Barbara quilted and crocheted numerous quilts and afghans and every family member received at least one of her creations. She also enjoyed gardening and canning.
Barbara was a woman of faith and a long-time member of Divine Savior Parish and Holy Cross Christian Mother’s Society.
Barbara is survived by her children Janice (special friend Jim LaHaie) Kowalczyk, Richard (Pamela) Schommer, Marlene (Jay) Bretschneider, Joyce (Ernie) Wood, Donna (Michael) Kultgen and Lori (Bill) Schmit; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin; brothers Peter and Raymond Jacoby; sisters Laverne Schneider and Elvira Michalek; son-in-law Mike Kowalczyk; granddaughter Lindsey Kultgen; and grandson-in-law Parker Hayes.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at Divine Savior, Holy Cross Chapel, 5330 Hwy. B, Belgium, Wis. 53004.
The family will receive visitors at Eernisse Funeral Home Belgium, 171 Royal Ave., Belgium, Wis. 53004, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday prior to the service.
Barbara will be laid to rest beside Alvin in Divine Savior Parish, Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Divine Savior Catholic Parish are appreciated.
The Schommer family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Forest Haven and the Aseracare Hospice team for their loving care of Barbara.
