Anzia honored for his service

Monday night’s Belgium Village Board meeting was the final one for Pete Anzia as Village President.

Anzia didn’t seek re-election in April after serving as president for six years and trustee for four.

He was appointed in June 2018 by the board after Vickie Boehnlein resigned to seek the village treasurer job, a post she still holds.

Anzia was one of three people elected to the board in a five-person race in 2014. He cited the Main Street construction project, which started about when he joined the board, as a priority.

Soon after that project was done, the board moved to the new Village Hall at 104 Peter Thein Ave.

“A lot of stuff changed,” Anzia said.

Paving Silver Beach Road had been on the village’s list for decades, and that project will be checked off this spring.

“I think we accomplished quite a bit in the village,” Anzia said after Monday’s meeting.

He also listed rebuilding the shelter at Community Park and landing Kwik Trip — a  Wisconsin favorite and huge draw for a village longing for a grocery store.

“I’m very proud of what we did,” Anzia said.

He didn’t seek another term to give someone else a chance.

“I think it’s time for a change. I think you need fresh blood in once in a while. Otherwise you get the same results,” he said.

Now, Anzia said, he will enjoy “a few more nights per week” that he doesn’t have to attend meetings, and he will continue serving with the Belgium Fire Department.

He read the last agenda item as president — “certificate of appreciation to me.”

Trustee Rose Sauers read the certificate thanking Anzia for his service.

Trustee Roseann Geib ran unopposed for Village President and will take over the post.
