Allenstein is featured artist at Port’s Gallery 224

    ARTservancy artist Krista Allenstein is the featured December artist at Gallery 224 in Port Washington.
    Allenstein’s paintings, inspired by her time at Sidney Woodlands Preserve in Glendale, are also available for viewing  on the gallery’s website.  
    Allenstein said the ARTservancy program was a challenge for her since she exclusively paints neon signs, which are typically not found in the woods.
    She paints on hardboard covered by vintage maps. In this series, titled “Signs of Sidney Woods,” she featured the location of the preserve on the maps with a circle.  
    While traditional neon signs serve the purpose of attracting the attention and the potential business of customers, the Sidney Woods signs seem to say, “Come on in, enjoy me, but please don’t touch a thing,” Allenstein said.
    In January, the gallery will feature the work of Emily Verbeten, who spent the last year researching and creating artworks inspired by Zinn Preserve in Hartford.
    ARTservancy is a joint effort by Gallery 224, the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust and the Milwaukee River Revitalization Foundation.
    Although Gallery 224 is closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the exhibit is in the windows of the gallery at 303 N. Franklin St.
