Adult spelling bee to be held Sept. 7 in Mequon

Jessie Garcia, who covered the Green Bay Packers for 24 years, will be the opening master of ceremonies for the Adult Literacy Center’s spelling bee, Spell Wars, on Friday, Sept. 7.
There are still a few openings for three-person teams, as well as spectators for the event, to be held at the River Club in Mequon.
The event includes dinner and registration at 6 p.m. and the spelling bee at 7:15 p.m.
Garcia became one of the first woman in the country to host an NFL coach’s show, “The Mike Holgram Show,” in 1998 and also co-hosted “The Mike McCarthy Show” with Larry McCarren for many years.
Mitch Teich, executive producer and co-host of Milwaukee Public Radio’s “Lake Effect,” will serve as the bee’s word pronouncer.
A silent auction will be held with prizes that include a Brett Favre signed football and two golf foursomes from River Club and Hidden Glen Golf Club, fitness packages from Elite Sports Club and Anytime Fitness and five front-row seats and a gold parking pass for the Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds game on Sept. 18.
The spelling bee is the literacy center’s main fundraiser, with proceeds going toward its adult educational programming in English as a Second Language, General Education Development (GED), citizenship test preparation and community outreach in health and financial literacy.
