‘Barnum’ to be presented July 26 to 28 at Port High


THE LIFE AND TIMES of Phineas Taylor Barnum, best known as P.T. Barnum, will be presented at the Port Washington High School Performing Arts Center Friday through Sunday, July 26 to 28, by Port Summer Theatre. “Barnum” covers his life from 1835 through 1880, when he and his circus toured the U.S. and major cities around the world. Among the performers were the oldest woman alive Joice Heth played by Brianna Dawson, Tom Thumb played by Tylar Schaefer, Ringmaster portrayed by Laura Cashin and Swedish opera singer, Jenny Lind, portrayed by Cait Henning. Jack Wagner plays Barnum and Regan Surges his wife. The show will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 in advance for adults and $8 for children 10 and younger and senior citizens 60 and older and $12 at the door.     Port Summer Theatre will stage “Barnum” Friday through Sunday, July 26 to 28, at the Port Washington High School Performing Arts Center.
    The musical will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
    “Barnum” is an American musical based on the life of showman P.T. Barnum. It covers the period from 1835 through 1880 and is set in major cities of the world where Barnum took his performing companies.
    The production combines elements of traditional musical theater with the spectacle of the circus with characters that include jugglers, trapeze artists, clowns and representation of such real-life personalities as Jenny Lind and General Tom Thumb.
     P.T. Barnum, played by Jack Wagner, is in the circus business despite the wishes of his wife, portrayed by Regan Surges.
    He is working with talents such as the oldest woman alive, Joice Heth, played by Brianna Dawson, the tiny Tom Thumb portrayed by Tylar Schaefer,  the ringmaster played by Laura Cashin and the famous Swedish opera singer, Jenny Lind, portrayed by Cait Henning, with whom he falls in love.
    In the end, Barnum returns to his wife and joins with another circus owner, James Anthony Bailey played by Tyler Grant, to form the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
    Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart’s score includes “There’s a Sucker Born Every Minute,” “Join the Circus,” “The Colors of My Life” and “Come Follow the Band.”
    The ensemble cast members include Anna Couwenhoven, Joe D’Acquisto, Frank Gedelman, Bryce Grant, Katie Hale, Allison Juárez, Kaitlin Kropidlowski, Madelyn Ksioszk, Lydia Kunagen, Miranda Larsson, Alina Lisowski, Gavin Muller, Molly Pashak, Felicity Rondeau, Barbara Roob, Abby Rowley, Macy Smith, Bonnie Steele, Braeya Thomas, Connor Tremelling, Dana Tremelling, Alysa Williams, Jack Williams and Ron Voigt.
     The orchestra, conducted by Michael Neumeyer, is comprised of Heather Beilke, Lauren Bendt, Mike Bendt, Dave Bernander, Ethan Beardsley, Wylan Boyle, Rachel Burczyk, Jason Chay, Joe D’Acquisto, Patricia Ferriera, Phil Greve, Judi Hansen, Ryan Henning, Oliver Juárez, Susan Klein, Connor Tremelling and Dana Tremelling,
    Diana Neumeyer is directing the show with Mary Van Pietersom as vocal director and choreography by Brianna Dawson, Laura Cashin, Diana Neumeyer and Dana Tremelling.
    Dennis Gephart, Zack Gephart and Jeff Cheseboro are the light and sound designers.  The set construction, stage and flight crews were led by Lindzy Willborn and include Matt O’Donnell, Claire Ball, Frank Gedelman and Raymond Polgar.
    Advance tickets may be purchased at the Port Washington Parks and Recreation Department office, 201 N. Webster St., and Drew’s True Value. They are $10 for adults and $8 for children 10 and younger and senior citizens 60 and older.
    Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $12.
