Port will hire firm to search nation for new administrator

Port Washington aldermen on Tuesday agreed to seek outside help when selecting a new city administrator.

The Common Council unanimously agreed to look for a firm to help conduct a national search for a replacement for longtime City Administrator Mark Grams, who announced recently he will be retiring early next year.

The firm would be expected to develop a job and community profile, job qualifications, appropriate salary, develop and implement a marketing plan, conduct the search and identify a list of desirable candidates.

Volunteers rally to repair trail

When torrential rains caused flooding in Port Washington last year, they also damaged an area that’s largely unseen — the mountain bike trail that runs along the Interurban Trail and west of Upper Lake Park. 

It has taken hours of manual labor — not to mention the efforts of nearly two dozen people, adults and students alike — but the trail is finally back in shape.

Members of the Metro Mountain Bikers, Ozaukee Branch, did much of the work themselves, logging 90 hours of work to clear, clean and restore the paths.

County hasn’t lost its resolve in opioid lawsuit

The Ozaukee County Executive Committee voted unanimously Monday to not opt out of a class-action lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies that make and market drugs blamed for the opioid addiction epidemic. 

The vote came after the County Board was advised that dozens of Wisconsin counties who are part of the lawsuit must vote to opt out or remain part of the “negotiation class,” which was formed to negotiate a settlement with the companies.

The county originally voted to participate in the lawsuit in December 2017.

Possibility Playground opens to smiling children

The skies were gray and the temperatures cold, but that didn’t stop children from running into Possibility Playground in Port Washington’s Upper Lake Park when the play area for children of all abilities was re-opened Sunday, Nov. 3, following a $250,000, 10th anniversary expansion and renovation project led by volunteers.

Hotel patrons blamed for downtown traffic woes

Drivers leaving the Harborview hotel parking lot in downtown Port Washington have been snarling traffic by heading the wrong way on East Grand Avenue.

There haven’t necessarily been many accidents due to the confusion, but it’s a situation that needs fixing, members of the city’s Traffic Safety Committee agreed Oct. 21.

“I think this is happening a lot more than we think,” Ald. John Sigwart, a member of the committee, said.

Port High School program to mark Veterans Day

Port Washington will mark Veterans Day with a program at Port High at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11.

Four veterans will be inducted to the Wall of Honor — Air Force veteran Lisa Azzoline, nominated by the Landt-Thiel American Legion Post 470 in Saukville; Army veterans Mike Kultgen and Charlie Watry, nominated by the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post 82 in Port Washington, and Army veteran David Bichler, nominated by the Ozaukee County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5373.

Town of Grafton man killed in unexplained Hwy. I rollover

A 39-year-old Town of Grafton man was killed late Monday night when the car he was driving in rolled over multiple times and threw him from the vehicle.

According to an Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office report, Aaron Monson was traveling north on Highway I near Beechmoore Court in the Town of Cedarburg just after 11 p.m. in a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer.

For an unknown reason, the Blazer entered the east shoulder of Highway I, before re-entering the roadway. It then rolled over several times and Monson was thrown from the vehicle. He was the lone occupant.

School choice comes at a cost to local taxpayers

Port Washington-Saukville School District residents will pay nearly a half-million dollars in taxes to send students to private schools this school year under a Wisconsin private school choice program that is having an increasingly significant impact on the local school property tax levy.

The Port Washington-Saukville School Board on Monday certified that levy, which is increasing by $627,024, and approved a revised 2019-20 budget that will result in higher tax bills.

Historic firehouse gets a makeover

If you look around the new offices of Lake Financial Group in downtown Port Washington, you will see signs of the building’s past as the city’s historic firehouse.

There’s the light fixture in the main conference room made by company managing partners Brian Barber and Justin Behm  that incorporates pieces of an old fire hose found in the building as well as a ladder.

Judge was a public servant, courthouse mentor

Retired Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Joseph D. McCormack was the quintessential public servant and a mentor to those he worked with in the court system.

He started his career as a social worker, then fulfilled a dream by attending Marquette University Law School and earning his law degree.
