Port Police Department to host June 27 bike rodeo

The Port Washington Police Department will hold its annual bicycle rodeo from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Lincoln Elementary School in Port Washington.

Children may be eligible for a free bicycle helmet once they complete the bicycle safety course. 

T-shirts, snacks, a bicycle raffle, drinks and other giveaways will also be available.

No advance registration is necessary. 

The school is at 1325 Theis Ln.

Airstream food trailer planned for Franklin St.

The concept of parking an Airstream trailer on a grassy lot on Franklin Street in downtown Port Washington and serving ice cream and other seasonal treats from it was recommended for approval Tuesday by the city’s Design Review Board.

But not all the board members were enthused about the idea, with Marc Eernisse, an adviser to the panel, saying he does not believe it fits with the city’s historic downtown.

“An Airstream trailer in beautiful downtown Port Washington doesn’t appeal to me,” Eernisse said.  “I don’t think it fits with our concept of downtown.”

After a century, school’s out for good

Friday, like every other last day of school, the teachers at St. John XXIII School’s St. Mary’s Campus said goodbye to their students and began to pack up their rooms for the year.

But this wasn’t just any end of the school day — it was the end of an era. When these students and teachers left the school, it was for the last time.

After educating generations of students over more than a century, St. Mary’s School in Port Washington is closed. Next year, classes will meet in new classrooms being added onto the school’s St. Peter’s Campus.

Investing in Port’s historic firehouse

Port Washington’s historic fire engine house at the corner of Wisconsin and Pier streets is getting a facelift — and a new use.

The building at 102 E. Pier St., which most recently was the home of Blue Heron Artisans Gallery, is being acquired by Lake Financial Group, which will move its offices there.

Lake Financial is outgrowing its current space on the second floor of the Boerner Mercantile Building on Franklin Street, co-managing partners Brian Barber and Justin Behm said.

City takes emergency action to protect marina

The Lake Michigan water levels have been on a relentless rise, covering what were once wide sandy beaches in Port Washington, threatening lakefront properties with erosion and now costing the city almost $39,000 to protect one of the community’s greatest assets, its marina.

On Monday, the Harbor Commission approved an emergency resolution that allowed it to hire McMullen & Pitz to extend the pilings on which the piers float by two feet.

Board praises apartment plan for St. Mary’s School

A plan by Ansay Development to create a national historic district surrounding St. Mary’s Catholic School in Port Washington and then convert the school and parish center into 20 to 35 apartments got the endorsement of the Design Review Board Tuesday.

“I think this is a neat concept,” board member Jeremy Hartline said.

“This is an area just waiting for something like this.”

Fishing is good in Port, if you’re a pelican

They look out of place fishing in the cold water of Lake Michigan, but scores of American white pelicans that have been seen along the Ozaukee County shoreline and particularly in the Port Washington harbor recently seem quite at home here.

That’s because these birds are no strangers to Wisconsin or Port Washington, where they’ve been seen in spring for years. 

Ansay’s plan for St. Mary’s School hinges on historic listing

The future of a proposed redevelopment of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Port Washington hinges on two things — a pay-as-you-go tax incremental financing district and National Register of Historic Places designation and the tax credits it may bring, the Port Washington Common Council was told Tuesday.

Ian McCain, Ansay’s design/construction manager, said the firm will seek the National Register designation for not only the school building, which was built in 1916, but also the parish center immediately to the south.

Rising lake prompts emergency marina action

High lake levels are causing issues in the Port Washington marina, with officials scrambling to prevent the floating piers from coming off their tracks.

The Harbor Commission is expected to declare the situation an emergency and consider proposals to weld approximately two-foot extensions onto each of the pilings on which the piers float when it meets Monday, June 10, City Administrator Mark Grams said. 

The city is in the process of determining the best system to use and process to handle it, Grams said.

Hot dogs, tours and speeches to celebrate a new Port High

Hundreds of people attended a cookout and dedication ceremony Monday evening to celebrate the completion of the $45.6 million Port Washington High School project. The event gave visitors an opportunity to tour the school, including the new commons with its large Pirates logo on the floor and the cafeteria (background) with its wall of windows (photo at right).
