Fire Up the Forge to be held on July 9

Fire Up the Forge, a unique hands-on opportunity to learn some of the basics of blacksmithing, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at Pioneer Village in the Town of Saukville

Eight blacksmiths will demonstrate their unique styles of iron artistry on portable forges and at the Pioneer Village blacksmith shop.

Forged items will also be available for sale.

Those attending can sign up to make an item to take home with them.

  A variety of food and beverages will be available to purchase in the Pioneer Village hall.

Meijer store donates to NAMI Ozaukee

The Grafton Meijer store has made a $5,000 donation to Ozaukee County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The donation was made as part of the Meijer Team Gives campaign.

During the campaign, the store allows its team members to make a total of $1.5 million in surprise donations to nearly 300 nonprofits across the Midwest.

Youth plein air contest winners are named

The winners of the 20th annual Plein Air contest have been announced by the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

The contest ran from June 13 to 21 and featured the works of 99 young artists.

Their artwork will be exhibited at the Cultural Center through Sunday, July 9.

The artwork was judged by professional artist and youth educator Janann Miller, who has taught art for more than 30 years in the Whitefish Bay School District and is a long-time member of the Cedarburg Artists Guild.

A People’s Choice Award was voted on by people visiting the Cultural Center.

A Place To Be to hold fifth anniversary event

A Place To Be Spirituality Center in Saukville  will celebrate its fifth anniversary from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 21.

The event will include a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. The main dish, sloppy joes, will be provided.

A variety of games will be played at 7 p.m., and an optional sunset painting project will begin then as well.

There is a $35 fee for the painting project.

There is no charge for the other events, although free-will offerings will be accepted.

The center is at 166 W. Dekora St.

Add some personality to your summer salad

Summertime practically begs for salads to be served. After all, nothing makes for a better salad than vegetables picked fresh from the garden or purchased at the farmers market.

Add some meat or cheese, if you like, or a few nuts and you’ve got a delicious side dish or meal.

But what is a salad without dressing?

Dressings add personality to any salad. It can be as simple as a splash of lemon juice to add an acidic edge or as elaborate as a Caesar or green goddess dressing with a plethora of ingredients.

A flower so beautiful you can’t help but grow it

Some plants seem destined to end up in our gardens. How else can you describe the phenomenon in which a plant that you’ve only heard of in passing suddenly starts showing up everywhere you look?

This happens to me with alarming regularity, most recently as I gazed over a sea of the most brillant magenta flowers with slightly glaucus foliage playing host to a steady stream of butterflies.

A taste of the USA, then here to stay

Coming to America wasn’t a decision Corinna and Stephan Korten took lightly.

They had both been to the United States on multiple occasions, but this time they wouldn’t be returning to their home near Dusseldorf, Germany, and their two children, Jenna, 8, and Calle, 1, would be staying here with them.

“I think my parents were pretty much in shock,” Corinna said. “I am an only child.”

She had fallen in love with America decades before.

In high school in 1990, Corinna’s family hosted an exchange student from Cedarburg for a couple of weeks, Camie Schaff.

Celebrating the county’s most recent centenarian

A group gathered at the Noridge Trail home of Port Washington’s Barbara Bode on June 22 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Bee Janssen, a longtime Mequon resident who has lived at NewCastle Place for the past 13 years. Helping Bee celebrate were (front row, from left) Kathy Maglio, who held Bee’s cake, Cherry Watts, Bee and Miss Wisconsin 2022 Angelica Niemann. Bee was born on June 25, 1923, to George and Gladys Meyers Van Pelt. She met Gustav Janssen at a USO dance during World War II, and the couple were married for 65 years.

Port cops help get summer off to a safe start with Bike Rodeo

The Port Washington Police Department helped ensure summer got off to a safe start for the children who attended its annual Bike Rodeo at Lincoln Elementary School last week. Reserve officers guided 5-year-old Liam Redig (above) and another boy through an obstacle course while Julie Weinberger made sure Sophie Newell’s helmet fit correctly (far right in bottom photo). The event also include bike inspections, safety tips and a BMX show.

Port students named to S.D. State dean’s list

Two Port Washington students were among the more than 3,000 students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at South Dakota State University.

Anastasia Poull is a student in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

Katelyn Poull is a student in the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering.
