Man charged with driving the wrong way on Hwy. 57 while intoxicated

A 43-year-old man accused of driving the wrong way on Highway 57 in Fredonia last month while he was drunk has been charged with a felony in Ozaukee County Circuit Court.

Fond du Lac resident Michael A. Cochenet, who is currently under the supervision of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for a possession of child pornography conviction in Fond du Lac County, faces one count of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and a misdemeanor charge of second-offense operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants.

Fredonia town election draws interest

The Town of Fredonia will see a change in leadership with two seats to be elected in spring.

Incumbent Jim Stemper isn’t running for re-election.

Incumbent John Depies is running, along with Eric Schmitz, Kandy Huiras and Matt Miller, a former trustee who ran for town chairman in 2023 and lost to then incumbent Lance Leider.

Terms are for two years. The election is April 7.

Shipwreck Sanctuary council to meet Jan. 15

The Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council will meet at Hawthorne Hills Park in the Town of Saukville from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15.

The meeting will be in the multipurpose building at the park.

The agenda includes community updates from the Sugar Maple Nature School and the Ozaukee County Historical Society; and updates from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration staff on Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary programs, upcoming events and research.  

Public comments will be taken at approximately 7:50 p.m.

Data center power line foes gird for PSC battle

Area residents, organizations and municipalities are gearing up to fight American Transmission Co. over the routes it has recommended using to bring electricity to the Vantage Data Centers’ Lighthouse Campus in Port Washington.

The Town of Saukville, Restoring Lands — the former Ozaukee Washington Land Trust — and the Responsible Energy Alliance — a coalition of Saukville, Trenton, Fredonia and Farmington residents — are among those opposing ATC’s recommendation that the electrical lines be routed through either the Town of Fredonia or Town of Saukville.

Nature school draws from far afield

Four days a week, Paul and Emily Calhoun and their two young sons, Gus, 9, and Walt, 6, make the eight-or-so mile drive from the Town of Trenton to Hawthorne Hills County Park and Sugar Maple Nature School, whose main feature is an outdoor classroom that spans hundreds of acres of prairie, woodlands and waterways, including the Milwaukee River. 

That longer-than-usual trek to school is a small price to pay, they believe.

Bank’s Christmas tree a work of student art

Election draws plenty of interest in village

A write-in winner will have the option to join the Northern Ozaukee School Board, and the Village of Fredonia will have a couple of leadership changes this spring.

The seats of village trustees Richard Abegglen, Jessica Franck and Natalie Eippert are up.

Eippert filed for noncandidacy.

Abblegen and Franck turned in papers to run.

So have former Trustee Rudy McCormick and newcomer Anne Redmond.

Three candidates will each win a two-year term.

Grant paves way for demolition of Waubeka Mill

Ozaukee County has been awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to assess whether the Waubeka Mill and Button Factory are a brownfield site in need of further remediation.

The $142,800 grant is dependent on the site’s owner granting permission to the county and state Department of Natural Resources to access the site, according to a memo to the county Natural Resources Committee, which is scheduled to vote next week on accepting the grant and recommending it to the County Board.

Ozaukee High collaborative project a hole-in-one

This school project was a hole-in-one, but that won’t often show up on people’s scorecards if the fruits of students’ labor have anything to say about it.

Ozaukee High School’s technical education and art departments collaborated to create a nine-hole indoor miniature golf course.

Tech-ed teacher Travis Kornely saw another school made one online and wondered if Ozaukee High could do its own.

Sound test does little to quiet autocross debate

A sound test held Saturday, Dec. 20, that was intended to demonstrate how loud a proposed Town of Fredonia autocross and drifting motorsports venue would be is garnering mixed reactions.

The Town Plan Commission requested the test after multiple neighbors spoke against a plan by Jay Bullington to construct a paved lot for motorsports on 72 acres at the southeast corner of Highway 57 and Jay Road.
