YOUR PIX: Visitor from the frozen tundra becomes a local celebrity at the Port harbor

Crowds gathered, cameras, tripods and telephoto lenses were deployed and shutters clicked—a celebrity was in town, sojourning in the Port Washington harbor. Cindy Harmeyer of Saukville was on the scene to make this handsome portrait. The visitor came unannounced from the frozen tundra—the real Arctic tundra, not the Lambeau Field version—and quickly drew adoring crowds attracted by his movie star looks. The visitor was long-tailed duck that stood out among the flocks of waterfowl in the harbor with his gorgeous plummage, including extravagantly long tail feathers. Long-tailed ducks are seen only rarely here, but they are not rare in the avian world. In fact, they number in the millions, breeding in the high Arctic and flying some distance south to spend winters, usually along ocean coasts. Besides their remarkable plummage, they are distinctive for their ability to dive as deep as 200 feet to feed.
