As has happened in years past, there are vacant spots on the ballot for Fredonia voters in the Tuesday, April 7, election.

There are just two Village Board candidates while three seats are open.

An at-large seat on the Northern Ozaukee School Board also has no takers.

That means the person getting the most write-in votes will be offered those seats. If that person declines, the Village Board or School Board will decide whether to appoint someone.

Village trustees Joshua Haas and Richard Abegglen are up for re-election while Trustee Jill Bertram, who has served on the board since 2008, is stepping down.

Both Haas and Abegglen were elected in 2018. Haas also is running for Ozaukee County supervisor against Don Dohrwardt, who also is village president.

The dearth of candidates has occurred recently in Northern Ozaukee School Board races, as well.

“It’s a little bit of concern,” Dohrwardt said. “We’re a small village. There aren’t many (people) to pick from.

“I expect to have a few write-ins. We have a few every election.”

Dohrwardt said he has a name in mind to write in but wouldn’t say who it will be.

“I’m sure we’ll find somebody through the write-in,” he said.

In the Northern Ozaukee School District, School Board members Suzanne Miller and Kevin Klas are running for the two Town of Fredonia seats, one of which has been vacant.

Miller is currently the board’s at-large representative.

Whoever gets the most votes will get a three-year term representing the Town of Fredonia. The other will take the two-year term for Town of Fredonia.

That will leave the at-large seat open, which may either be filled by a write-in candidate or board appointment or left vacant until the next election.

Other School Board incumbents up for re-election and without opposition are board President Brent Neis, representing the Town of Saukville, and Treasurer Jennifer Clark, representing the Village of Fredonia.

In the Town of Fredonia, current Supr. Jim Stemper is up for re-election while resident John Depies has filed to run for supervisor. Both are unopposed.
