Wrestling rolls on

Cedar Grove-Belgium High School’s wrestling team was hoping to get more matches in a home triangular meet last Thursday, but both contests turned into lopsided victories.

The Rockets beat Plymouth, 63-12, and Reedsville, 67-6.

“We were expecting a close dual with Reedsville. They came in a little banged up. They don’t have a lot of their guys,” coach Trevor Peterson said.

The Rockets won four of five matches.

At 182 pounds, Deven Soerens beat Casey Braun, 7-5, in a sudden victory. In the first minute of overtime, Soerens scored a takedown and rode him out for the win.

“Deven wrestled well,” Peterson said.

At 138, Jackson DeRuyter pinned Shawn Storzer in 39 seconds.

At 285, Diego Morales pinned Jade Busse in 2:36.

At 126, Mason Hoopman beat Ayden Sebo in a 10-0 major decision.

Reedsville won one match.

Against Plymouth, five Rockets scored pins. The fastest came from their star, Cael Erickson.

At 145 pounds, Erickson pinned Silas Daily in 51 seconds.

“Silas is a very good wrestler. He wrestles at the Askren Wrestling Academy. We knew about him,” Peterson said.

Dylan Teunissen at 170 pounds pinned Ryan Koll in 2 minutes in what Peterson called a “nice win.”

At 182, Soerens pinned Mason Meyer in 3:08.

At 113, Jesse Burg pinned Eddie Mella in 4:58.

At 132, Winston Reichle pinned Jordan Lensmire in 3:36.

The Rockets’ other victory came from Mason Hoopman at 126 pounds. He beat Kade Novak, 7-2.

Plymouth won two matches.

In looking at the WIAA’s tournament plans announced last week — adjusted due to the Covid-19 pandemic — Peterson said not much changes for the Rockets.

He said he hoped Cedar Grove-Belgium would host the Division 3 sectional but the Rockets are going back to Dodgeland.

The Division 3 team state tournament will be at Wausau West and the individual tournament is at Wausau East.

The big change is that only the top two qualifiers from sectional competition advance to state instead of the top three.

Peterson said the standard was the top-two wrestlers for years, before the WIAA expanded it to three, “which was always a good thing to get more kids down to state.”

The Rockets host Ozaukee on Thursday, then compete at a regional meet in Random Lake on Jan. 30.

Ozaukee wins two of three at Kewaskum

Ozaukee’s wrestlers won and lost narrow duals and won one handily in a triangular meet at Kewaskum.

The Warriors nipped Mishicot, 40-36; beat the hosts, 45-18; and lost to Campbellsport, 42-33.

Against Mishicot, Tayten Platner at 106 pounds, Mya Delleree at 120, Efrain Altamirano at 126, Cael Large at 138 and Sklyer Mills at 220 pinned their opponents. Times weren’t available.

At 132, Philip McLarty won an 11-1 major decision.

Against Kewaskum, Large at 138, Talan Dybul at 145 and Jaysen Delleree at 152 pinned their opponents. Zach Bell at 285 pounds beat Sam Gauthier, 5-4.

Against Campbellsport, McLarty at 132, Large at 138, Jaysen Delleree at 152 and Platner at 106 earned pins.

Altamirano at 126 beat Ostin Blanchard, 12-5.

The Warriors host the Rockets on Thursday before both teams compete in a regional meet at Random Lake on Jan. 30.
