Winter activities at Cedarburg Bog set
Winter activities sponsored by the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog have been announced.
A program on recognizing the characteristics of trees and shrubs in winter to identify them will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 25.
Naturalist Danielle Bell will lead the session. Participants will spend time observing plants using hand lenses, then learn how to use an identification key for inter woody pieces.
The program will include an indoor and outdoor session, so participants should dress for the weather.
The annual winter hike and chili potluck
will be held from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2.
Field Station Director Emeritus Jim Reinartz will lead the annual four-mile hike into the heart of the bog. If ice conditions in the bog are not safe, participants will hike the uplands instead. The field station website, uwm.edu/field-station/, will be updated several days prior to the hike with snow and ice conditions.
The chili potluck dinner will be at 4:30 p.m. Chili and beverages will be provided by the Friends, and participants are asked to bring a dish to share.
Creating a backyard wildlife habitat will be discussed by Dan Panetti of Wild Birds Unlimited from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20.
Panetti will cover everything from building a native planting inventory to removing and controlling invasive species. The types and uses of various bird feeders, food and water sources, creating covering and habitat, housing and protection to attract a wide variety of wildlife will also be discussed.
The session is a crash course for beginners with lots of tips for seasoned hobbyists.
