Weinhold for the win

They finally got one.

It took until the 75th minute of the 11th game, but the Grafton High School boys’ soccer team is winless no more.

The Black Hawks secured a 1-0 win against Cedar Grove-Belgium at home on Sept. 30 behind a goal by senior Ethan Weinhold.

“The monkey off your back,” coach Jake Wilde said. “First one down. We’ll focus on playing good soccer going forward, hopefully.”

Weinhold scored on a corner kick — for the Rockets. He won a 50/50 ball around midfield, then dribbled toward the Rockets’ goal. Keeper Landon Altheimer came out, but Weinhold eluded him and put the ball in the net.

The Hawks held on for the game’s final five minutes.

“Boys were excited as they should be,” Wilde said. “It feels much better when you have a good performance too.”

The Hawks had earlier chances to score but couldn’t break through. Their defense, however, remained solid for the entire game.

“The majority of the game was played in our attacking half. We did a good job winning 50/50 balls out of the air, better than we had all year,” Wilde said. “Good things happen when you possess the ball.”

The Hawks last Friday lost at Living Word Lutheran, 5-0, to go to 1-10-1.

Grafton was to play Slinger on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The Hawks play at Luxemburg-Casco on Friday, Oct. 10, and at Cedarburg on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
