This week in history:

This week in history made history for a couple of rival high schools.

The Grafton girls’ basketball team on March 14, 2009, beat Durand, 54-52, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison to win its second state championship in its third straight trip to the tournament.

The Black Hawks (24-2) survived being outscored 24-16 in the fourth quarter — they played four quarters back then — to hang on for the title.

Grafton forward Sarah Eichler, a 5-foot-11-inch senior, scored 23 points to share game-high honors with Durand guard Samantha Hoyt, and none were bigger than the final two of her prep career.

With 6.7 seconds left and Grafton clinging to a 52-49 lead, Eichler was fouled in the backcourt by the Panthers’ scrambling defense. She went to the free-throw line and calmly swished both shots, giving the Hawks an insurmountable lead.

Eichle shot 10-for-15 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. Center Myranda Tyler scored 13 points and had five rebounds, and Hannah Eichler scored 11 points. Hilary Wellnitz had four assists.

The Hawks beat Monroe, 53-45, a day earlier to advance to the title game. Sarah Eichler had 24 points.

Other players listed in the box score for either or both games included Shauna Binsfield, Ashley Pfannerstill, Christy Collins, Erin Bode, Carley Pfannerstill, Emily VanLangen, Kaitlin Brandenburg, Ali Lorge, Mary Kalies and Abbey Benzschawel.

Grafton’s coach was Bob Maronde, who would eventually be inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Durand finished 23-3.

In 2007, the Port Washington boys made their first trip to the state tournament since 1936 — when they went 3-0 and won it all — and finished second.

Port (17-10) lost to Monroe (23-4) on March 17, 52-46.

Forward Chris Prom scored 14 points and guard Josh Gasser had 13. Mike Burmesch had five assists.

Port beat Wisconsin Dells, 64-48, the day before to get to the title game. Burmesch had 18 points, Prom had 15 and Gasser and Jon DeBoer each had 12.

Wisconsin Dells finished 18-8.

Other Port players listed in the box score from either game include: Cameron Heilman, Marty Clarke, Kenny Dornberg, Josh Prochnow, Conner Tearney, Chase Greg and Mike Brost.

Three years later, Gasser won the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in Wisconsin and went on to star for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

John Bunyan was in his first year as coach of the Pirates.

Neither team has been back to state since.
