Warrior girls win at home

The Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team ended its season last Friday in decisive fashion.

The No. 7-seeded Warriors lost at No. 2 St. Mary’s Springs in a Division 4 regional final, 79-52.

Gabby Klas, who eclipsed 1,000 career points this season, was the only one to score in double digits, netting 16 points. Caitlyn Weyker had eight points and six assists, and Evy Geis scored eight points and eight rebounds. Natalie Miller had 11 rebounds and seven points.

A fast start quickly fizzled for Ozaukee.

“We started out quick with a couple quick baskets including a three-pointer by Madison Karmasin,” coach Linda Weyker said.

The Ledgers led, 45-19, at halftime.

“St. Mary’s Springs had really good shooters from the outside. We worked hard to cover each player,” Weyker said. “The girls gave all their effort and left everything they had on the court. It just was not enough to get us to the victory we hoped for.”

The Ledgers got 20 points from Braylee Freund, 15 from Reese Neumann and 14 from Isabelle Coon.

St. Mary’s Springs beat Winnebago Lutheran, 66-59, on Saturday and plays at No. 1-seeded Laconia on Thursday in a sectional semifinal.

Ozaukee demolishes Kohler in playoffs

The Warriors advanced to the semifinal with a 77-55 win over visiting Kohler on Feb. 22.

Klas poured in 25 points, making seven of eight free throws. Caitlyn Weyker scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Miller had 14 points and six rebounds.  Sophie Uhlenberg had 12 rebounds. Geis had 12 points and nine rebounds.

“We started strong and finished strong,” coach Weyker said.

The Warriors iced the game at the free-throw line, going 13-for-14 in the final two and a half minutes of the game. Klas went 6-for-6 and Caitlyn Weyker made 4-for-4 during the stretch.

“Free throws definitely were a key part of the game for us at 74.3%. We also played a good defensive game,” coach Weyker said.

Ozaukee finished 12-14 overall and was third in the Big East Conference at 9-10 under interim coach Weyker, who took over the team in December after the district and Jason Pollared parted ways.

Oostburg won the Big East at 17-2, and Sheboygan Lutheran was second, at 16-3.
