Voskuil for the victory
Cedar Grove-Belgium High School boys’ basketball coach Josh Ketterhagen said last Friday’s game at Big East Conference rival Random Lake didn’t look pretty at times.
But it became much more appealing when Matthew Voskuil was shooting the ball.
The junior guard scored a game-high 20 points and broke open a halftime tie in leading the Rockets to a 55-44 win.
Voskuil shot 7-for-13 from the field, including going 4-for-7 on three-pointers and 2-for-3 at the free-throw line. He added six rebounds.
“Voskuil had a great second half. He made three threes in a row. His scoring really picked us up,” Ketterhagen said.
The Rockets needed someone to fill in after Aaron Veldhorst and Ethan Wonser got into foul trouble.
Wonser ended with 12 points and six rebounds. Jeffrey Emperley scored nine points, and Michael Navis grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals. Jacob Peiffer added six points.
The game was deadlocked at halftime, 26-26.
“It was a battle. We just started making a few shots,” Ketterhagen said.
The Rockets hit enough free throws at the end, going17-for-25 for the game, and forced some turnovers to seal the win.
“I thought our defense was pretty good. We were flying around a bit,” Ketterhagen said.
The Rockets, 4-7 in the Big East and 7-8 overall, had Thursday’s game against Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah postponed, play at Hilbert on Friday, at Kiel on Monday and play in the conference tournament Feb. 8.
