Volunteers, boats sought for Vets Outing

The Disabled Vets Fishing Outing will return to Port Washington’s lakefront on Wednesday, June 28.

This is the 50th year the event has been held.

Last year, concerns about Covid-19 meant that the fishing portion of the annual event was canceled, but this year the VA Hospital, where many of the veterans hail from, approved a full day of events — including fishing.

About 100 veterans are expected to spend a morning on the lake fishing, then enjoy a fish boil and cookout at the Port Legion Hall.

Organizers are seeking volunteers and boats to help make the day a success.

While it takes 35 to 40 boats to take all the veterans out, right now only 13 boats are signed up for the event.

Anyone who can volunteer their boat and equipment, is asked to call Mary at  (920) 918-9144.

In addition, volunteers are needed to help load the boat at about 7:30 a.m., to clean fish at 11 a.m. and to clean up after the outing.

People are also needed to bake homemade cookies and bars for the veterans. Bars and cookies in disposable containers can be dropped off at the Legion Hall by 9:30 a.m. on June 28.
