Saukville village trustees voted last week to spend $200,000 from its unassigned general fund balance on vehicles and other items for the police, fire, public works and parks departments.

The bigger ticket items include spending $69,440 on a Chevrolet Tahoe utility squad car for the police department and $40,000 for public works street maintenance.

Other items the village intends to purchase for the police department include five taser control devices for $12,206, a village camera system for $3,765 and a helmet camera for $1,323.

For the Department of Public Works, the funds will be used to replace tires on a dump truck for $2,210, repair a generator for $5,350 and to replace a park bench and trash cans at Union Cemetery for $1,765.

The fire department will receive $9,000 for a positive pressure ventilation fan and personal protective equipment and the parks department will receive $4,000 to install a new service door at the Veterans Park pavilion.

Finally, $10,000 will be used to improve technology in village government while $40,761 is earmarked for undesignated uses.

The village maintains a general fund balance, basically a savings account, as working capital and for emergencies.

The village has a policy that it maintain an unassigned fund balance between 16.6% and 30% of its annual operating expenses. Any money above that range can be used for one-time capital improvements or special projects

The village’s unassigned fund balance at the end of 2021 was 53% of operating expenses, Village Administrator Dawn Wagner said.

Figures for 2022 are not yet available, she said.
