Utech is Cultural Center’s featured artist

Watercolor artist Karen Utech is the January artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
Utech has been entranced by the medium from the first time she tried it and paints based on her emotion in the moment. She gravitates toward nature and landscapes but has expanded her designs to cityscapes, still life, animals, portraits and plein air.
Utech has devoted the last 30 years to teaching children with special needs and supervising special education teachers,. As an administrator, she strives to mentor staff using what she has learned as she moves forward to her next endeavor of being an artist.
Utech will demonstrate her art at the center from noon to 4 p.m. on Jan. 4 and 7; from noon to 3 p.m. on Jan. 11; from 2 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 14 and 17; from 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 21; from 2 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 24; and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 28.
She will teach “Watercolor Painting: Loose Landscapes” from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Participants will learn a variety of techniques, then make a landscape painting by creating simple, clean washes to begin and detailing the piece toward the end.
The class is suitable for beginners and experienced students. The fee, which is $55 for center members and $66 for nonmembers, includes all supplies, although students should being a terrycloth towel.

The center at W62 N546 Washington Ave. is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
