Two men killed in high-speed, single car crash on rural road
Two 21-year-old Town of Cedarburg men died Monday evening of injuries they sustained in a single-car accident on Western Avenue not far from the Ozaukee-Washington county line.
Austin Riechers and Devin Krumbiegel were killed when the Honda Civic Riechers was driving went off the road west of Woodside Drive in the Town of Cedarburg.
“Speed appears to be a factor in the accident,” Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Lt. Wayne Lambrecht said. “Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.”
Lambrecht said officials don’t know where the men were before the accident or where they were heading at the time, only that they were heading east about 6:34 p.m. Monday when they hit a stretch of recently resurfaced road and Riechers apparently lost control of the vehicle.
“It’s apparent the driver did lose control when he entered Ozaukee County, and the road surface changed,” Lambrecht said.
The Civic slid into the south ditch, he said, where it struck a culvert, utility pole, trees and a mailbox before coming to rest near the base of another culvert.d
“It was a very violent crash,” Lambrecht said. “It was over very quickly.”
Riechers was wearing a seat belt at the time, Lambrecht said, but deputies are not sure whether Krumbiegel was wearing one.
The Cedarburg Police and Emergency Management departments provided assistance with traffic control, and the Cedarburg Fire department aided in the investigation, Lambrecht said.
An accident reconstruction crew worked the scene but has not completed its report, Lambrecht said.
“We’re continuing our investigation,” he said. “We’re still doing interviews and gathering information.
