PORT WASHINGTON - Memorial Day will be commemorated in Port Washington in traditional fashion twice this year.

In addition to the Monday morning ceremony, there will also be a ceremony on Friday.

Friday’s ceremony, sponsored by the county American Legion and its Auxiliary as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be at 5 p.m. at the Ozaukee County Justice Center’s War Memorial. The keynote speaker will be former Sheriff Jim Johnson, who is the American Legion Second District Commander, and Ozaukee County Board Chairman Lee Schlenvogt.

There will be music by singer Windy Hope and bugler Jim Russel of the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post in Port will perform.  A color guard from the Landt-Thiel American Legion Post in Saukville will also participate.

On Monday, the Memorial Day ceremony begins  with a 10:30 a.m. parade that will start at the corner of Wisconsin and Main streets and wind its way through downtown to Veterans Memorial Park.

The speakers will be Port Washington Mayor Ted Neitzke and Isabella Schmitz, a Port High student who recently won the Van Ells-Schanen Post Auxiliary scholarship.

There will be a wreath presentation and flag-folding demonstration. Taps will be played and a gun salute held.

The Port Washington High School band will play, and the high school choir will also perform.

Following the ceremony, the Legion will provide hot dogs and ice cream at its clubhouse across Lake Street.
