Three county officials not running for re-election

Local voters will see some familiar faces on the November election ballot, but also some new ones as three of the four Ozaukee County elected officers are leaving and a redrawing of legislative boundaries bring in some candidates new to the region.

Turnout can be expected to be high with the presidential and Senate races on the ballot. But locally, changes are afoot with County Clerk Karen Neimuth and Register of Deeds Ron Voigt stepping down and District Attorney Adam Gerol moving to be an Ozaukee County Circuit judge, succeeding the retiring Paul Malloy.

Running to take their places, according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s list of candidates will be Kellie Kretlow for county clerk, Jennifer Laurin for register of deeds and Ben Lindsay, a prosecutor in Gerol’s office, for district attorney.

Sandra Tretow, who was appointed county treasurer last year, is running for election.

All four are unopposed.

All legislative races will be contested, with one primary in the offing.

State Rep. Rob Brooks, R-Saukville, is now representing the 59th Assembly District after representing the 60th District for a decade.

He is opposed by Jack Holzman, a Democrat from Belgium.

The new 60th District reaches north to Fond du Lac from Saukville and west to Dodge County, but no longer includes Port Washington.

In the 22nd Assembly District, Rep. Paul Melotik, R-Grafton, is opposed by Dana Glasstein, a Mequon Democrat.

The redrawn district now includes Port Washington, Cedarburg, parts of Mequon and Saukville and goes west to Richfield.

In the race for the Eighth State Senate District, Duey Stroebel, R-Saukville, is opposed by Democrat Jodi Habush Sinykin of Whitefish Bay.

The district is currently represented by Dan Knodl. But Knodl, who lives in Germantown, chose not to run again for the redrawn Eighth District so as not to oppose  Stroebel, who currently represents the 20th Senate District. The new Eighth District includes Cedarburg,  Grafton, Saukville and Port Washington, and parts of Germantown, Menomonee Falls, Mequon and Milwaukee County’s north shore.

In the race for the new 20th Senate District — which stretches from Jackson north to Fond du Lac, west from Mayville to Belgium and includes Fredonia, Random Lake and Campbellsport — all the candidates are new to northern Ozaukee voters.

Two Republicans —former State Rep. Timothy Ramthun of Campbellsport and State Sen. Dan Feyen, R-Fond du Lac, are running, as is Democrat Michael Rapp of Van Dyne.

That will force a runoff between Ramthun and Feyen on Aug. 13 to see who goes up against Rapp in November.

Finally, in the Sixth Congressional District, longtime Rep. Glenn Grothman will be opposed by Oshkosh Democrat John Zarbano.
