Those who served community, country honored

Thursday, Sept. 11 — the 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks — was Military and First Responder Night at the Grafton High School football game, and among those honored at halftime was Mark May, a longtime member of the Cedarburg Fire Department who helped search for survivors at Ground Zero at the World Trade Center site and is now dealing with health problems related to his efforts. Accepting the Military and First Responder Award on his behalf were (left in photo above) his wife Lyn (seated), daughter Brianne May and her boyfriend Scott Kusko. Other honorees were (from left) Ken Nawrocki, a Navy veteran and longtime member of the Rose-Harms American Legion Post who was accompanied by his son-in-law Mike Mentzel; Paul Reigel, an EMT captain in the Ozaukee Central Fire Department; and John Stuhlmacher, deputy director of Ozaukee Emergency Management and a decorated military veteran. The annual event is organized by the Grafton School District and Celebrate Grafton.
