Students asked to take part in essay contest

Ozaukee County students in grades two through 12 are encouraged to participate in the “Keep the Dream Alive: It Begins With Me” essay contest held to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birth, life and dreams.

The winning essays will be read by their authors during the Sunday, Jan. 15, online celebration of King’s life.

Entries must be submitted to by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.

In their essays, students may reflect on King’s vision of a community as a society based on justice, equal opportunity and love of one’s fellow human beings and how they can make a difference in realizing that world.

Essay submittals should include the author’s  name, grade, school and a contact email and phone number.

The contest is for students in grades two to 12 who live in Ozaukee County or are enrolled in a school, either public or private, in Ozaukee County.

Students may work in groups on the essays.

Essays by students in grades two and three must be a maximum length 250 words; in grades four and five 350 words; grades six through eight 450 words; and grades nine to12, 550 words.

Essays will be judged based on how they address the theme and how they relate the student’s own personal ideas, work and experiences to the topic and show an understanding of Dr. King’s ideals.

Entries must not be a biography of King.

They will also be judged on the basis of clearly expressed, creative ideas and ability level with an emphasis on clarity, creativity  and originality.

Correct use of basic grammar and writing skills will also be considered. 

Winners will record their speeches and they will be broadcast at this event.
