State just out of reach for Grafton/Cedarburg

Bullhawks have several near misses in qualifying; Port Washington scores season high with 115.2 points

The Grafton/Cedarburg high schools’ gymnastics team barely missed qualifying  for state in a few events at the Menomonee Falls Division 1 Sectional on Saturday.

The Bullhawks took third in the eight-team event with 135.675 points, behind Arrowhead’s 143.475 and Menomonee Falls/Germantown’s 142.85.

The top two teams and top five individuals qualified for the state meet in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Senior Tessa Luzney just missed on the all-around, taking sixth with 35.425 points. The fifth-place score was 35.725 points.

Junior Molly Tomashek scored 8.75 on beam to tie for sixth place, missing out of fifth by 1/10th of a point. Her teammate, junior Amanda Babcock, was eigith with 8.725.

Luzney was seventh on bars with 8.625, and Tomashek was eighth with 8.55. The fifth-place score was 8.825.

Luzney was seventh on vault with 9.075, which was 1/10th of a point out of fifth.

Babcock and Luzney tied for seventh on floor with 9.3 Fifth place was 9.375.

Tomashek was eighth in the all-around with 34.35 points.

Other vault scores for the Bullhawks were: Tomashek, 8.575, 10th; freshman Charlotte Purnell, 8.25, 18th; Babcock, 8.1, 23rd, and freshman Kaylen Chmiel, 7.75, 34th.

Other bars scores were: Purnell, 7.9, 14th; Babcock, 7.625, 17th; and Chmiel, 7.125, 22nd.

Other beam scores were: Luzney, 8.425, 13th; Purnell, 8.4, 14th; and Chmiel, 7.65, 25th.

Other floor scores were: Purnell, 8.6, 17th; Tomashek, 8.475, 19th; and Chmiel, 7.9, 27th.

Other all-around scores were: Babcock, 33.75, 11th; Purnell, 33.15, 12th; and Chmiel, 30.425, 21st.

Port Washington scores a season high

The Port Washington gymnastics team posted a season-high 115.2 points in a Division 2 sectional at Whitefish Bay on Friday.

That was good for seventh of 10 teams. Whitefish Bay won the meet with 144.725 points. Nicolet was second with 142.1 points. Then came Elkhorn, 138.225; West Bend East, 128.2; Valders/Roncalli, 127.775; and Waterford, 119.575. Behind Port was Whitewater, 112.225; Jefferson, 111.6 and Shorewood, 108.6.

“We had strong performances on all events,” coach Gale Sigler said.

“Our beam routines were some of the best this season. We stayed on and our scores reflected it.”

Junior Audrey Dickson scored 8.3 to tie  for 19th. Junior Liz Ernest had 7.95 for 26th. Sophomore Gaby Ortiz had 7.425 for 34th and junior Alyana Alexander had 7.275 for 29th.

On floor, Dickson had 7.85 for 23rd. Then came Bollech, 7.15, 32nd; Ernest, 7.025, 33rd; Ortiz, 6.775, 37th and Alexander, 6.35, 44th.

On bars, Dickson had 7.875 for 18th. Then it was Bollech, 6.6, 31st; Ortiz, 4.85, 44th; and Alexander, 4.75, 45th.

“Unfortunately, I felt our scores for floor and bars didn’t reflect the effort and showmanship demonstrated by our gymnasts, but we ultimately achieved our team goal of scoring our highest team score in the final meet of our season,” Sigler said.

Dickson led the Pirates on vault with 8.25, good for 19th. Then came Ernest and Ortiz, who each scored 7.7 and took 33rd. Bollech had 7.4 for 38th.

Dickson was 14th in the all-around with 32.275 points. Bollech was 24th with 28.75 and Ortiz was 26th with 26.75.

“I’m very proud of the accomplishments made by these gymnasts during the season and am looking forward to building onto these next year,” Sigler said.
