Seven years of support and counting

Not long after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Barb Skutka thought forming a local support group would be a good idea.
But she didn’t know if anyone would show up to the first meeting at the Cedar Grove Public Library.
“Thirty-one walked in, showing the need in the area was there,” Skutka said.
Seven years into her endeavor, the Cedar Grove Parkinson’s Support Group is going strong. Nearly 150 people have attended at least one meeting and today monthly meetings regularly draw 60 people.
Skutka changes the topics and formats to keep people interested. Speakers cover topics from mental health to insurance and neuroplasticity to nutrition. Several interactive exercise demonstrations are held, and sometimes the group splits into care partners and patients.
“This is where the guts of the support comes in. Tough subjects are discussed, solutions may be found or maybe not, but you always feel heard and know that those in the group understand and are there for you,” Skutka said.
She also holds social events such as a Christmas party and summer picnic. The theme of the September meeting was seven years of support.
Of the original 31 members, 15 are still regulars. Some have passed and others aren’t physically able to attend anymore.
The group dynamics have changed since 2017.
“I remember our first meeting seven years ago — 8 o’clock came and people were out of the building in a flash,” Skutka said. “Nowadays we start earlier for more chatting and have to kick people out so we can lock up the building. It’s a great group and it warms my heart to hear the laughter, joking, the getting together outside of the group, and yes, sometimes crying, but always in love.”
