Senior night is nearly sweet for CG-Belgium

It was nearly a happy senior night last Thursday for the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School girls’ basketball team.

The Rockets missed some late opportunities and lost, 55-50, to Big East Conference foe Kohler.

Down by four late in the game, Rocket Alexis Bahr was fouled and went to the free throw line for the bonus. In the meantime, a Kohler player got called for a technical foul.

Bahr missed the front end of the bonus, and Katelyn Morris missed both technical free throws. On their possession after the technical, the Rockets committed a turnover.

From there, the Blue Bombers held on.

“Kohler played real physical. They played a good game,” coach Mike Bikman, who goes by Coach Bik, said, adding Kohler fed off the hostile crowd.

The Rockets went 5-for-15 on free throws for the game.

“We had a great opportunity to win it but we couldn’t make our free throws,” Bik said.

Sophie Beightol had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bahr had 11 points and five rebounds. Olivia Bahr had 10 points and nine rebounds. Aubrey Marti had six points.

“Olivia Bahr is playing really well. Aubrey played some good defense. Just couldn’t buy a basket,” Bik said. “Sophie had a real nice game. She has been coming on.”

Bik started his three seniors — Ashley Acevedo, Jessica Sutryk and Jessica Schueller — and each scored.

“I give them credit for hanging in there all year,” Bik said.

The Rockets finished 7-16 overall and 5-14 in the Big East, good for fifth place of seven teams in the South Division. They were to play at Random Lake in the Division 3 playoffs on Wednesday. The teams split the season series.
