School finance guru receives honor from state group

Topher Adams, the Grafton School District’s director of business services, has been named the 2026 School Business Manager of the Year by the Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials.

Adams, who was hired by the School District in 2016, is being honored for his leadership, innovation and commitment to excellence in school business operations.

“From the outset, Topher has brought a rare combination of strategic vision, financial expertise and authentic dedication to the Grafton School District,” Supt. Jeff Nelson, who nominated Adams for the award, said. “He has led with integrity and foresight, guiding us through complex capital projects, strengthening our financial position and ensuring our operations are both efficient and sustainable.”

Beyond his business acumen, Adams’ concern for people and team-building ability have made him a leader in the district, Nelson said.

“Beyond his technical skill, Topher’s collaborative spirit and genuine care for people have earned him the deep respect of colleagues, staff and community members alike,” Nelson said. “He’s not only a trusted adviser and key leader in our district, but also a valued friend and role model.”

Adams, while saying he is honored to receive the award, deferred credit for his accomplishments.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire team at the Grafton School District,” he said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve a community that values excellence in education and supports innovation in school operations.”

Adams’ accomplishments in the district include securing voter support for referendums, managing major facility improvement projects and maintaining the district’s strong financial position.

He has also been active in the Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials, serving as a mentor and co-chairman of the organization’s Fall Conference Planning Committee. 

Adams will be recognized for receiving the award during the State Education Convention in Milwaukee in January 2026.
