Saukville Saints get notch in win column

The Saukville Saints are on the wrong side of perfect no more.

The Saints picked up their first victory of the season on Sunday, 4-2, over the Brownsville 49ers at Fred Dickmann Field in Saukville.

The victory split the season series with the 49ers, who beat the Saints, 12-2, at home the day before.

On Sunday, the Saints blew open the game with a three-run fifth inning. Aaron Brockman singled, and Jordan D’Angelo bunted for a single, which led to an errant throw and runners moving to second and third.

Taylor Devenport was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Mike Sherrick followed with a two-RBI single up the middle. Mike Pruefer then grounded out to score another run.

The Saints had already taken a lead right away. In the bottom of the first inning, Sherrick walked and Andrew Wood and Pruefer each singled to load the bases.

Dustin Kesner smacked a sack fly to plate Sherrick.

The Niners finally got to Saints’ starter Tom Hartwick in the top of the seventh inning. A double, hit batter and another double by Ryan Norton played two runs.

Hartwick was taken out in the ninth inning after he gave up a one-out single. Kesner got the final two outs.

Hartwick allowed two earned runs on nine hits, walking one and strking out six in 8-1/3 innings.

The Saints only managed six hits but they were timely.

On Saturday, Brownsville got the upper hand early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Saints answered with two runs in the fourth inning. Wood, Mike Mueller and Paul Duhr loaded the bases. Brockman plated two runs on a single.

The 49ers added one run in the fifth and two more in the seventh on two singles and a throwing error. They got five in the eighth inning after having two men on with two outs, thanks to an error.

Mueller had two hits for the Saints.

Sherrick allowed seven runs (three earned) and nine hits, walking two and striking out two in seven innings.

49er Max Huseboe got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) and five hits, walking one and whiffing five in six innings.

The Saints, 1-4, host the Kewaskum A’s at 1:30 p.m. at home on Sunday, June 20.
