Saints start season with near miss on road

The Saukville Saints kicked off their Rock River League season by letting a late lead slip away in a 6-3 loss at the Kewaskum A’s on Saturday.

After three scoreless innings by Mike Sherrick and another three by Simon Bares, the Saints led, 1-0, heading into the seventh inning.

The Saints scored in the fourth inning. Sherrick was hit by a pitch, and Bares singled. Steve Dickmann reached on an error, which brought a run.

The A’s got Bares in a jam in the seventh inning. Brendon Zimdars relieved and hit the first batter he faced with the bases loaded. He struck out the next hitter, then gave up a two-run single.

The A’s added three runs in the eighth inning, making it 6-1.

The Saints tried to rally in the ninth and scored two runs on four singles. Alex Enteny, Mike Mueller, Aaron Brockman and Ian Tucker each had a hit. Bares brought in the second run on a groundout.

Elenteny and Brockman each had three hits. Dickmann, Mueller, Tucker and Bares each had two.

Sherrick whiffed five and allowed one hit in three innings. Bares allowed three runs on two hits, whiffing two and walking three in three-plus innings. Zimdars allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings, whiffing two and hitting three.

For Kewaskum, Brady Young allowed three runs (one earned) on 14 hits, whiffing 13, walking two and hitting one in 8-1/3 innings. Jason Hoida whiffed one in 2/3 of an inning.

Nick Rosenthal had two hits for the A’s.

The Saints play at Hustisford at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15.
