Ryder Cup remains on schedule
The Ryder Cup, an iconic professional golf competition between the United States and Europe, is still slated to be held as scheduled at Whistling Straits Golf Course in the Town of Haven this fall.
The competition, including practice days, is scheduled for Sept. 22 to 27.
“The PGA of America continues to closely follow the guidance of federal, state and local public health authorities. The safety and well-being of all is our highest priority,” Brian Gabriel, regional public relations director for the Ryder Cup, said in an email. Gabriel is vice president of client experience in sports for Weber Shandrick, a public relations firm based in Chicago.
The Ryder Cup is played in even-numbered years between 12-member teams from the U.S. and Europe.
Five match-play sessions are played over three days. Each match is worth one point. Ties award a half point to each team.
The first team to score 14.5 points wins the cup. If the teams tie at 14-14, the team who had the cup retains it.
The competition’s location switches each time between Europe and the U.S. This is the first time Whistling Straits will host the Ryder Cup.
Europe beat the U.S., 17.5 to 10.5, in the 2018 Ryder Cup in France.
The U.S. Team is comprised of the top eight players in the points rankings and four captain’s picks. Steve Stricker of Madison is the captain.
The top eight are, as of this week, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Gary Woodland, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods.
The European Team includes the top four players from the European Points List, the leading five players on the World Points List and three wild cards. Padraig Harrington is the captain.
The nine European players who would qualify as of this week include Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Victor Perez, Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Danny Willett, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Lee Westwood and Bernd Wiesberger
Whistling Straits hosted the PGA Championship in 2004, 2010 and 2015 and the U.S. Senior Open in 2007.
