Robbery in door-to-door scam under investigation
The Grafton Police Department is investigating a door-to-door scam that has resulted in at least one robbery in the village.
Officials said a resident recently reported that someone came to his home claiming to be a We Energies employee and requested access into the house for service. The suspect asked the homeowner to go to the basement and run the water for 30 minutes.
The suspect then stole large amounts of jewelry and coins and fled the residence.
“If someone comes to your door and says they’re from We Energies, the very first thing you should do is ask to see an ID,” We Energies spokesperson Brendan Conway said.
“Our employees and contractors know if you go to a door and someone asks to see an ID, show it to them. Our employees want to prove that they are legitimate.”
Officials said if residents are not sure about someone claiming to be from We Energies, they should call the company at (800) 242-9137 to confirm.
