Riveredge to hold anniversary party
Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville is starting the new year with a series of programs, including a party to celebrate the center’s 57th anniversary.
The anniversary party will be held at the Fermentoriam in the Town of Cedarburg from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.
The open-house will include updates on projects, including the visitor center renovation plans, light appetizers and refreshments as well as birthday cake.
Executive Director, John Rakowski will speak at 7 p.m.
People of all ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
There is no fee but people are asked to register in advance by visiting riveredgenaturecenter.org.
The winter yoga series led by instructor Mary Anklam will continue with classes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 9 and 23.
January yoga classes will include sun salutations and other heat building and chest-opening postures, yin yoga, pranayama and meditation, through themes of nourishment and restoration.
The sessions are open to people ages 18 and older. There is a $10 fee for Riveredge members and $15 for nonmembers.
“The Milwaukee River, Floodplain Management and the Changing Climate” will be addressed by Dave Fowler from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9.
The session will be held in person and on Zoom.
Fowler has more than 40 years experience in flood management, stormwater issues, water resources and water quality management, having spent 36 years as the environmental policy coordinator and senior project manager with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
The free program is for people ages 18 and older.
“Winter Identification and Management of Woody Species” will be the subject of an 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, program.
Those attending will learn how to identify, manage and monitor trees and shrubs during the dormant season and review a collection of freshly cut live specimens by fruit, bud, twig, branch, bark and trunk.
Following lunch, participants will head outside to review management and identify populations of species in the field by setting and habitat.
The class is intended for people ages 15 and older. The fee is $65 for Riveredge members and $75 for nonmembers. The fee for students enrolled in high school or college is $35.
