Port Washington police officers and firefighters, as well as the Coast Guard and Ozaukee County rescue boat, were out on Lake Michigan Tuesday afternoon searching for a child who was reported to be floating on a log about a mile offshore.

Police received a call about 2:42 p.m. from someone on south beach who said they saw a child floating on a log.

Rescue personnel found the log floating a few hundred yards off the beach, according to police, but they found no signs of a child.

As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, no child had been reported missing, police said.

Emergency personnel continued to search the lakefront Tuesday night.
