Rebels top East in 2 overtimes

The eighth-grade Saukville Rebels youth football team started the conference season with a thriller.

Nate Uselding hit Ryan Burmesch for a 17-yard touchdown in the second overtime to beat West Bend East, 28-22.

The defense made two interceptions in the two overtimes to help key the victory.

The Rebels began the game quickly, taking a 16-0 lead behind Uselding touchdown passes to Matt Esselmann for 30 yards and Kenyon Davis for 42.

East took advantage of a couple of mistakes and got back in the game, cutting the lead to 16-14 at halftime.

In the second half, Connor Snodgrass caught a 45-yard pass from Uselding that set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Kaiden Schumacher. The game went into overtime after the teams finished tied at 22-22.

In the seventh-grade game, Logan Niemyer scored Saukville’s only touchdown on a 60-yard quarterback keeper. The Rebels lost, 33-6.

The sixth-grade game was a defensive battle. The Rebels held East to five first downs and won 6-0. Garett Kawczynski scored on a 12-yard run.

Caleb Runkel, Derek Schlenvogt and Vince Beining lead the defense with their tough play on the defensive line.

The Rebels host Cedarburg on Saturday. The sixth-graders start at 4 p.m., followed by the seventh and eighth-grade games.
