Reaching out via radio

Photos by Sam Arendt

With a winter storm bearing down on the area, members of Ozaukee Amateur Radio Emergency Services, or OZARES, set up a mobile communications station in Port Washington’s Upper Lake Park Saturday and communicated with other amateur radio operators throughout the country during its Winter Field Day. Participating in the event were (photo above) Tony Schneider, Joe Bettencourt, Todd Zumach, John Archer, Dan Reed, Dave Flowers and John Stuhlmacher, who is Ozaukee County’s deputy director of emergency management. Setting up a remote antenna were (far right photo) Schneider, Bettencourt and Flowers. The Ozaukee Sheriff’s Office mobile command center provided shelter for the radio operators (photo at left). OZARES is an organization of amateur radio operators attached to the county’s Division of Emergency Management who train to provide communication services during emergencies.
