Prohibition to be topic for Nov. 4 talk

Prohibition will be discussed during the quarterly meeting of the Ozaukee County Historical Society on Monday, Nov. 4.

The 7 p.m. meeting will be at the Peter Wollner American Legion Hall in Cedarburg, W57 N481 Hilbert Ave.

Patrick Steele, a retired college professor, will discuss the impact of Prohibition on Wisconsin.

The talk will look at how the nationwide ban on alcohol was enacted and enforced in the state, touching on everything from the northwood hideouts of Al Capone to the thriving network of underground speakeasies.

While many consider Prohibition a failure, Steele will challenge those attending to consider whether its legacy was how it shaped Wisconsin in lasting ways.
