Proefrock, Muecke lead Grafton net honors

Sophomore moves up to first team and senior named to second team again; Werner and Port’s Merow are recognized

Tying for third place in the North Shore Conference and winning its second regional title in nine seasons led to a trio of Grafton High School volleyball players earning all-conference honors.

Sophomore outside hitter Paige Proefrock, who was named to the NSC second team last season, this year was put on the first team.

She led the team with 321 kills —third in the NSC — 265 digs and 366 serve-receives. She was tied for second in aces with 53.

“This is a well-deserved first-team nomination. She is continually working on developing her game. As only a sophomore, the best is yet to come for her,” first-year coach Will Hall said.

Senior setter Kaitlin Muecke was named to the second team for the third straight season. She had 455 assists in the 5-1 offense and finished with more than 1,700 in her career. Muecke led the team with 56 aces and was second with 235 digs.

Her value, Hall said, went beyond her physical skill.

“She was a great senior leader. She worked hard every day and helped make everyone better each day,” he said.

Senior middle hitter Amelia Werner earned honorable mention. She led the team in blocks with 49 and was third in kills with 162.

“She was a dominate middle. She’s a very physically advanced player that is going on to play in college and continue her development,” Hall said.

Werner will play at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich.

For Port Washington, junior Norah Merow earned second-team honors for first-year coach Kevin Buettner.

“In a year where middles was the deepest position talent-wise in the North Shore Conference, Norah was among the best. She led our team in every offensive category for hitters and easily our MVP this season,” he said.

Merow led the Pirates with 199 kills, averaging 2.2 per set. She hit .280, more than 80 points higher than second place, and led the team in blocks with 62. She was fourth in aces with 28.

“Not only was this a great year for Norah compared to other middles in conference but it was in the top 10 all time in many categories for Port Washington volleyball,” Buettner said. “She has had a very impressive career so far and is not done yet. I know she will continue to add to her already dominating numbers and might finish at the top when it is all said and done.”
