Port Washington High School’s tennis team continues to grow with 38 girls out this season.

The Pirates have a mix of returning players and some fresh faces “eager to learn the game of tennis,” coach Melonie Zielinski said. The team has 12 freshmen.

Senior Chloe Schueller and junior Tess Schueller are back at their No. 1 doubles spot.

“Chloe and Tess are returning with confidence about their strategy of the game and have increased the pace and position of their groundstrokes,” Zielinski said.

Sophomore Kaylee Doll is back at No. 1 singles “with more awareness and comfort of what it takes to play in this position. With her consistency and placement of the ball, she will be able to hold her own as she takes on tough competition,” Zielinski said.

Senior Moorea Thompson “who plays with a lot of consistency” will be at No. 2 singles, Zielinski said.

Junior Zaara Rehman will play at No. 3 singles.

“Zaara plays with a lot of pace,” Zielinski said.

The Nos. 2 and 3 doubles aren’t set in stone yet, she said.

At Monday’s tournament at Kohler, the Pirates took fourth of seven teams. The hosts won.

Doll, Rehman, Thompson and Adelyn Klein at No. 4 singles each went 1-2.

Doll beat Vanessa Ziegler of Sheboygan South, 6-4, 1-6, 12-10.

“She was able to use consistency in placement to keep her opponents on the move,” Zielinski said.

Rehman beat Gabriella Orth of Racine St. Catherine’s, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

Thompson beat Natalie Chakar of St. Mary Central, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9.

Klein beat Julia Storch of Pacelli, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.

Chloe and Tess Schueller went 2-1. They beat Drew Korth/Emma Jares of St. Mary Central, 7-5, 6-7 (6), 12-10; and Rakshya Bhatta/Elizabeth Binversie of Sheboygan South, 6-2, 6-2.

“Chloe and Tess are both hitting with lots of pace and their movement proved to be successful during their second and third matches of the day,” Zielinski said.

New No. 2 doubles team Jessica Boccio and Madelyn Hughes went 2-1. They beat Christina Trzasko/Holly Trzasko of St. Mary Central, 6-0, 6-3; and Abbie Moravec/Bree Novotny of Martin Luther, 6-3, 6-2.

“They both used communication and opportunities at the net to win their second and third matches of the day,” Zielinski said.

The No. 3 doubles team of Jojo Czarnecki and Paige Vang went 1-2. They beat Briar Armatowski/Emily Rosenthal of Pacelli, 6-4, 6-4.

Port plays Saturday at Slinger and Monday at West Bend West.
