Port tennis sweeps rival Grafton

The Port Washington High School boys’ tennis team stormed through Grafton on May 10, sweeping its rival in warm and windy conditions.

The Pirates didn’t lose a set to the Black Hawks.

“Every single player used placement, consistency and patience within their match to get the job done,” coach Melonie Zielinski said.

At No. 1 singles, Jakub Micha beat Ben Anciaux, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2, Gabe Welton beat Wyatt Belew, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 3, Sam Kopp beat Henry Debaley, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4, Wes Hoag beat Jack Wilkins, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Conner Cowen and Luke Markiewicz beat Tyler Rau and Evan Kloss, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2, Mikey Ross and Lucas Poull beat Greg Dempsey and Mitchell Teunissen, 7-5, 7-5. At No. 3, Joe Sepanic and Walker Malouf beat Liam Rau and Jakob Olson, 6-3, 6-2.

Last Saturday, Port won six matches in a round-robin tournament at Sheboygan North.

Micha beat Cameron Elwer of La Crosse Central, 6-2, 6-0. Welton beat Nolan Heath of La Crosse Central, 6-2, 6-1. Hoag beat Peter Emerson of Milton, 7-5, 5-7, 10-2.

In doubles, Cowen and Markiewicz beat Cooper Vanzee and Nou Txeng Yang of La Crosse Central, 5-7, 6-3. 10-2. Ross and Poull beat Luis Beltran and Tim Vang of Sheboygan South, 6-1, 6-4. Sepanic and Malouf beat Timmy Moua and Connor McCoy of La Crosse Central, 6-4, 3-6, 12-10.

“We played competitive matches, had wins and it was a good tournament to get ready for conference matches this upcoming week,” Zielinski said.

Port was to play at Whitefish Bay and host Slinger, both on Tuesday, and play at Nicolet and host West Bend West, both on Wednesday. Port plays in a Kohler quad on Friday and Saturday.

Grafton was to play at West Bend East and Homestead on Tuesday and host Hartford and Cedarburg on Wednesday.
