Sheriff’s deputies are continuing their investigation into a crash on I-43 in the City of Mequon Monday night that killed a 62-year-old Port Washington man.

Michael Fosco died at the scene of the crash — about a half mile north of Highland Road — of injuries he suffered during the accident, according to the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses saw Fosco driving his 1983 Harley Davidson motorcycle on the shoulder of the freeway, where he lost control of the bike and struck an embankment about 6:15 p.m. Monday, Captain Christy Knowles said.

“We don’t know why he was on the shoulder,” she said Tuesday. “Was it something mechanical with the motorcycle? Was it medical?

“We’re hoping the autopsy or a look at the motorcycle might help.”

Knowles said an autospy was to be conducted Tuesday.

Fosco was not wearing a helmet at the time.

The accident occurred during rush hour, which is one reason there were a number of witnesses and people who called to report the accident, Knowles said.

“There were no other people involved, no road rage. It does not appear speed was a factor,” she said, nor do authorities believe alcohol was involved.
