Port Lions conduct 989 vision screenings
The Port Washington Lions Club recently completed vision screenings for 989 students in 4K through seventh grade.
The students attend St. John XXIII, Saukville Elementary, Dunwiddie Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Thomas Jefferson Middle schools.
Of the students screened, 108 were referred for further follow-up by an optometrist or physician. It is estimated that 85% of a child’s learning is sight related — the reason Lions Clubs are involved in free vision screenings every year.
During the 2023-2024 school year, 130,850 students in Wisconsin were screened and 17,800 were referred for further evaluation.
Lions Clubs in Wisconsin collected more than 800,000 pairs of used eyeglasses during the past year. More than 450,000 of them were distributed for free throughout the United States and 49 other countries.
There are several eyeglass/hearing aid collection stations in Port Washington and Saukville.
Lions Clubs can assist with payment for professional eye exams as well as glasses.
