Port library hosts reading challenge

The Niederkorn Library in Port Washington has a variety of events set for February, including continuation of the winter reading challenge, a Barbie trivia and dress-up night and a program on racism and bullying.

The reading challenge, which began Jan. 1 and runs through Feb. 28, is open to people of all ages. Participants must read and log at least 500 minutes of reading to win a free book.

Barbie trivia and dress up will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20. In addition to Barbie and Mattel trivia, there will be an opportunity for participants to have their photos taken in a life-sized Barbie or Ken box.

Racism and bullying are the topics for the 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, Port Conversations.

Parents, community members and school leadership will discuss concerns and ideas to advocate against bullying and racism in schools and Port Washington.

Port Conversations is a discussion group for community members interested in respectfully exploring current issues.

The February cold weather craft kit, which will be available beginning at 9 a.m. Feb. 1, is a bottlecap flower. Kits include an instruction sheet as well as all the supplies needed for the craft.

Youth activities

STEM storytimes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays. The program includes a short storytime followed by hands-on science, technology, engineering and math activities.

There is a different theme each week, and the program is aimed at preschooler and kindergarten-aged students but is open to all.

Winter storytimes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays. An interactive storytime will be followed by a craft and/or playtime. Storytimes are most suitable for preschoolers but are open to all.

The Pokémon Trading Card Club meets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 1 in the children’s library. Those attending may trade cards and will receive a new-to-you Pokémon card from the library.

The club is open to children of all ages.

The Lego Club meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 in the children’s library. Those attending may use the library’s Legos to design, build and display their creations in the library. The club is geared for children ages 5 and older.

A sensory playtime  for children younger than 13 will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 28. The playtime includes a variety of tactile, sensory activity stations that children may explore with their caregiver. Stations may include shaving cream, sand, water or food items, so participants should dress to make a mess.

The library’s Teen Cafe meets in the community room from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for students in grades seven to 12. Games and snacks are provided, and special activities are planned throughout the season.

Adult programs

A grief support group will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 and 19 in the community room. The group is facilitated by Compassus Hospice.

The D&D PW Bookwyrms meets from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays in the community room.

Players and game masters of all experience levels are welcome.

The Friday Morning Book Talk Group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 14 in the quiet room.

The group is sponsored by the Port Washington Senior Center.

Copies of each month’s featured book are available for check out.

The Novel Ideas Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, in the quiet room.

Copies of the featured novel are available for check out.

The Bring Your Own Book Club meets at Inventors Brewpub at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27.

Those attending are asked to share the book they are currently reading or just finished, no matter the genre.

A short story hour will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Port Senior Center.
