Memorial Day activities in Port Washington have been canceled.

Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post 82 Commander John Jacque said that while the group will hold a small remembrance ceremony on Monday, the coronavirus pandemic “put the kibosh” on public events.

Plans had been in the works, he said, but the pandemic caused the Legion to rethink them.

“Everything’s kind of up in the air right now,” Jacque said. “We are thinking about having something in its place — maybe do something for the Fourth of July.

“Hopefully we’ll be back to normal next year.”

The Legion will hold a small commemoration of Memorial Day on Monday, with the playing of taps and a gun salute but it won’t be open to the public.
