Port gets singled out

If there were four doubles matches, the Port Washington and Grafton high schools’ tennis teams might still be playing.
The Black Hawks swept the singles matches last Thursday and hung on for a 4-3 North Shore Conference win as Port won all the doubles contests.
At No. 1 singles, Grafton’s Hailey Markoff beat Ally Schueller, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
At No. 2, Francesca Sulo beat Hanna Stopczynski, 6-0, 6-0. Lacy Greicar topped Madelina Figarino, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3, and Hailey Bault beat Abby Doll, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4.
Port’s No. 1 doubles team of Ashley Zygowski and Grace Neitzke beat Marleigh Knier and Kayla Schopbeck, 6-0, 6-0.
Gaby Ortiz and Madelyn Ksioszk beat Bryanna Mursch and Ava Mathei in the only three-set match of the day, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
At No. 3, Jennifer Boccio and Alena Schlenvogt beat Natalie Wimmer and Kaylee Gilson, 6-2, 6-2.
“Shoutout to all three doubles teams who beat Grafton,” Port coach Melonie Zielinski said. “All three positions were able to end the points quick by using effective net play and using deep baseline shots to their advantage.”
That was Port’s closest match of a busy week. They lost, 7-0, at Cedarburg on Sept. 21 and, 6-1, at Germantown on Sept. 22.
No Pirate won a set against Cedarburg. The No. 3 doubles team of Boccio and Schlenvogt won the most games, falling, 6-3, 6-1, to Sophie Woolridge and Evelyn Erickson.
The Port pair were the only winners in Germantown, and they brought a little drama in a long three-set comeback battle. The Pirates beat Gwendolyn Clay and Madeline Schmitt, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Schueller at No. 1 singles had the next closest match, losing 6-4, 6-3, to Star Pope.
Port was to play at Nicolet and to host West Bend West on Wednesday and at Whitefish Bay and at home against Slinger on Thursday. Saturday is the rain date for the matches.
Grafton was to host Hartford and Cedarburg on Wednesday and play at West Bend East and Homestead on Thursday.
