Port boys triple their fun in wins department
After the Port Washington High School boys’ basketball team broke through for its first victory of the season on Jan. 22, it liked the exhilaration of victory so much it won two of its next three games.
The latest came with that proverbial thrill of victory, a 78-75 overtime win at Hartford.
The Pirates outscored the Orioles, 9-6, in overtime. Coach Garrett Hoffmann said Cal Loose hit a big three-pointer and some clutch free throws down the stretch, including two that gave the Pirates a five-point lead.
The Orioles missed a late three-pointer and put in a bucket as time expired.
A 43-30 surge in the second half got the game knotted at 69 points at the end of regulation.
Eamonn Tetzlaff had a couple of big three-pointers late in the game that cut the deficit to one point and tied the game in the final seconds.
The Orioles, out of timeouts, threw a pass out of bounds as time expired.
Loose led five Pirates in double digits with 22 points. He shot 6-for-13 from the field and was 7-for-9 on free throws.
Grady Karrels had 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field, and he had seven rebounds. Kyle Uselding had 13 points and five rebounds. Tetzlaff had 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. He went 2-for-2 on three-pointers. Point guard Josh Arnold had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Port was behind, 39-26, at halftime. Hoffmann put Karrels on Hartford’s Zach Hermann, who killed Port in the first meeting this season. He finished with 24 points.
“He’s anchoring our defense and he’s really coming into his own as a scorer too,” Hoffmann said. “He’s been showing a lot of improvement.”
On Jan. 30, Port won at home against West Bend West, 60-40, to even the season series.
Karrels and Loose each had 12 points. Tetzlaff and Colton Struckman each had 10 points. Arnold had eight.
Carson Bauer led West with 20 points.
“I was really happy with our effort in that game. They had gotten us earlier in the year in game that we felt like we didn’t give our best effort. It was good to go out there and prove to ourselves that we know we’ve improved. To have that come full circle was really nice,” Hoffmann said.
Port, 3-9 in the NSC and 3-14 overall, hosted Homestead (13-1 NSC) on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The Pirates host Grafton (5-8) on Friday, Feb. 9, and Whitefish Bay (7-6) on Monday, Feb. 12.

The Knights took a 51-29 halftime lead over the Black Hawks. Junior Davion Hannah, who has multiple Division 1 scholarship offers, had 25 points and Damon Landrum Jr. had 20.
McNabb, Grafton’s all-time leading scorer, had 36 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field. He went 4-for-5 on three-pointers and 6-for-8 on free throws.
Carson Hildebrand had 10 points and Tommy Lutz had seven.
At West, McNabb had 28 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field, and Caleb Battles had 14.
