Pickleball, anyone?

In a response to the growing popularity of pickleball, the Belgium Lions recently donated materials and most of the labor to put in four courts in the village. Posed at the courts were (front row from left) Lions members Ronnie Weyker, Past President Don Bystricky, President Richard Howells, Fred Krier and Bob Makoutz, (back row) Belgium Public Works employees Ryan Figarino, Dan Birenbaum and Pat Wester. The Lions handled the painting while Public Works employees installed poles for the nets. Krier, a snowbird who plays pickleball in Arizona, spearheaded the project and offers lessons a few times per week. The Village Board in February approved allowing the Lions to paint the courts, after the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee recommended it. While the job eliminated half of the village’s ice rink, Birenbaum said plenty of room is still available. The village still has one tennis court. Photo by Sam Arendt
