PHOTO OP-ED: Why is this deer smiling?

The whitetail deer foraging in a Port Washington backyard looked quite happy when its picture was taken last weekend. Port’s resident deer have reason to smile, with many acres of forested green spaces to live in and apparently an ample supply of food, some of which is found in yards and gardens, to the consternation of their human owners. The section of the Ozaukee Interurban Trail just north of Jackson Street is home to a large deer population. The animals there are as tame as pets, and are treated as such by folks who sometimes leave deer lunches of shelled corn by the trailside.         Photo by Bill Schanen IV
